A One-of-a-Kind Identity

Your iris is completely unique - no two are ever the same, even in identical twins. Its intricate patterns of fibers, rings, and colours with over 200 distinct features.

The Science Behind Eye Colour

The colour of your iris comes from melanin, the same pigment that determines your skin and hair colour.

  • More melanin = darker eyes (brown)

  • Less melanin = lighter eyes (blue, grey, green)

Interestingly, blue eyes don’t actually contain blue pigment—they appear blue because of how light scatters within the iris, similar to why the sky looks blue.

Some people also have heterochromia, where each eye—or even parts of one iris—are different colours.

Always in Motion

The iris is a tiny but powerful muscle that is constantly working—even when you’re asleep. It controls the size of your pupil, adjusting automatically to changes in light.

It also reacts to more than just brightness. Your pupils can change size in response to:

  • Emotions

  • Sounds

  • Mental effort

  • Anticipation

These subtle movements help optimise vision and protect your eyes.

A Complex Natural Design

The iris begins forming before birth, around the third month of pregnancy, and continues developing during early childhood.

Its surface contains:

  • Crypts (small openings)

  • Furrows (fold-like lines)

  • Radial patterns

Together, these create a structure that often resembles a miniature galaxy or fingerprint.

Extra Facts

The iris works like a camera shutter, controlling how much light enters your eye.

It sits between the cornea and the lens, forming a ring around the pupil.

Babies are often born with blue or grey eyes, which can darken over time as melanin develops.

Your pupils can dilate when you see something you like—or someone you’re attracted to.

Eye colour can appear to change slightly depending on lighting, clothing, or even mood.

The iris responds in milliseconds, making it one of the fastest-reacting muscles in the body.

Top 5 colours in your Iris

Collarette

The collarette is the uneven border that circles your pupil, dividing your iris into inner and outer zones.
This intricate zigzag line forms before birth and stays with you for life, making it part of your personal eye signature.

Pupil

Your pupil is the dark opening in the centre of the eye that controls how much light enters.
It constantly adjusts in size depending on light and emotion, working with your iris.

Crypt

Crypts are small dark openings in your iris where the tissue is thinner, allowing a glimpse into deeper layers of the eye.
Like fingerprints, the pattern is completely unique to you.
